		<description><![CDATA[[...] William wrote the letter to his cousin, Edward A. Swezey (1820-1890), of Middle Island, Suffolk county, New York. At the time this letter was written, Edward had recently become a widower, his wife Cynthia Tuttle (Norton) Swezey having passed away on 5 September 1862. Edward and Cynthia had two surviving children of their own&#8212;Eliza Ann (b. 1848) and Alda (b. 1851). The couple had a also previously taken in and raised as their own the three boys of his sister, Harmony (Swezey) Bayles. They included Albert Edwin Bayles (b. 1839), Edward Franklin Bayles (b. 1841), and Richard M. Bayles, Je. (b. 1846). It is Albert and Edward Bayles that William refers to in the last paragraph of this letter. Albert and &#8220;Eddy&#8221; had recently enlisted in Co. A, 139th New York Infantry.
